Environment Drilling Technology, Inc

Third Wave is pleased to inform that TW Chemicals (TWC) and Environmental Drilling Technology, Inc. (EDTI) a Tulsa Oklahoma company, have signed an exclusive distribution agreement to market and distribute the Non Invasive Products (NIF's) that EDTI manufactures.

During the past ten years, these products have established a remarkable track record on performance. EDTI introduced these through their consulting service, which was specialised in restoring operations (remedial Services) to wells that were in danger of being lost. Thanks to their excellent performance they have changed their product range and as a result these products are now considered problem preventive.

The chemistry was designed to provide much better hole cleaning in directional and horizontal wells, and to stabilize shales and sands considerably better than PHPA, glycols, or asphaltenes, with EDTI's viscosity and filtrate loss products at less than 10 ppb.

Currently the following EDTI products are available:

  • FLC 2000™ a hole stabilizing fluid loss control agent; Converts almost any Oil or Water based mud to a Non-Invasive Fluid when 3-4 ppb are mixed with the mud. This additive will stabilize sands and shales.

  • LCP 2000™ This product appears to be the most powerful hole stabilizing product on the market today. It shear-stiffens and plugs within loss zones, which replaces the need for DOBCs or high solids squeezes. It limits invasion into thief zones in both Oil or Water Based Muds by converting a drilling mud to a dilatant pill slurry, that can be pumped at high concentrations through bit jets, MWD tools, and mud motors.
Used at 12 ppb for hole sweeps, and 48 ppb in WBM to 72 ppb in SOBM for lost circulation pills and for bull heading kick or blowout control kill slurries. In case of thief zones 12 ppb LCP slurry are spotted across thief zones prior to tripping. This slurry stops losses by sheer-thickening within the loss zone, wherein the dilatant slurry simply stiffens, and stops moving once it has invaded deep enough in the thief zone when its rheological friction factor exceeds the wellbore pressure pushing into it.
Unlike traditional LCM pills this LCP 2000™ is not a bridging material and can therefore be pumped at 48 ppb in water based (72 ppb for dilatancy in oilbase muds) through most BHA's provided that there is no screen installed. The Seal is not permanent, so it can be used in producing horizons.

FLC 2000™ Fluid Loss Control and Stabilizing Agent

FLC2000 is a high temperature stable dynamic Fluid Loss Control and Borehole Stabilizing Agent, not affected by borehole contaminants, for water or oil-based muds. This product converts almost any water and oil based drilling or workover fluid (including sodium formate) into a non-invasive fluid.

Product Fluid Loss Specifications
Through an 850 mDarcy Brady sandstone core, at 500psi pressure, a 4 ppb DWC2000 / FLC2000 sealed with only 12 cc filtrate invasion into the core in 30 minutes and gave 100% return permeability upon backflow. For API fluid loss test: Pour in 300 grams of 20-40 sand onto screen with no paper. Pour mud in cell carefully, not to disturb sand. Bleed Pressure to zero. Close the cell. Turn valves on and slowly raise pressure to 100 psi. Measure cubic centimetres out in 30 minutes. (Optional hot roll prior ambient temperature test.)

Product Composition
A precise formulation of fluid loss controlling and shale stabilizing polymers of varying solubilities, based on surface chemistry effects to minimize wall cake thickness, reduces differential sticking, and mechanically stabilize weak sands, shales, and faults, in either water or oil muds. Passes EPA LC50 test protocol, at over 1 Million ppm.

Product Application
FLC2000™ provides dynamic filtrate loss control. FLC2000™ is used for the following applications:
  • to prevent formation of a thick filter cake while drilling through pressure depleted formations.
  • to replace gilsonite, or PHPA as a shale stabilizer in water muds.
  • to use as an excellent fluid loss reducer for oil muds
  • as an aid in solids control: Perfect fluid loss control additive for Ultra-Low Solids muds. It ties up fine solids and gumbo, which will be removed by screens on rig shakers, reducing solids control costs.
  • considered essential for formation evaluation: Add up to 4 ppb to any mud for native state coring or drill-stem testing; Limits fluid invasion while coring, and reduces chances sticking packers in Drill Stem Tests.
  • Pilot test in mud from 3 to 6 pounds per barrel in clay, polymer, or oil-based mud systems, for viscosity increase. It should increase YP somewhat. (Best thinner is base fluid, water or oil). Use at least 3 ppb.
  • Maintenance: Run at pH 10.5. In water or oil-based muds, 2 to 5 sacks for each 90 feet drilled, depending on the severity of formation problems. Use several sacks of FLC per connection after LCP loss circulation pills to maintain seal.
Product Packaging
25 lb./11.3Kg sacks, 48 sacks/pallet; 1200 lbs/pallet.
Each pallet of FLC will treat 400 barrels of mud, or will make up 100 barrels of hole sweep pill.

LCP 2000™ Lost Circulation Pill

EDTI's Loss Circulation Pill allows operators to resume operations that have been disrupted by lost circulation, when conventional loss circulation materials cannot be pumped, or do not work. LCP2000 is an easier to use and environmentally acceptable alternative to high-solids squeezes or Diesel-Oil- Bentonite-Cement squeezes (DOBCs). At low concentrations LCP2000 pill is an Excellent Hole Sweep.

Product Specifications:
6 ppb LCP2000 in a mud passed EPA's LC50 test at over 1,000,000 ppm (above 30,000 ppm passes). Since LCP2000 is a temporary seal, it is nondamaging to producing formations

Product Composition
LCP2000 is made up of environmentally-safe and effective rheological conversion materials, specially processed to produce a slurry resulting in a dilatant sheerthickening rheological pill. LCP2000 is not a bridging material, so at 30 to 40 ppb it can be pumped through most directional BHA's. LCP2000 contains no cross-linking polymers, and does NOT set-up. LCP mixes readily and works in water or oil muds.

Product Application
  • Dilatant Plug

  • Circulate clean pill tank mud through hopper and add LCP2000 until hopper discharge is ropy and hopper quits taking any more. Note the the LCP2000 can be added "on the fly", 2 to 6 sacks/minute through the hopper and can be immediately pumped while drilling. The slurry is then dilatant and is ready to pump. Slowly pump slurry with pipe just above the thief zone. For severe losses, it may take three to five pills before dilatancy holds. Use 2-3 pallets for each 50 bbls of pill slurry (48 ppb - 60 ppb). Oil base muds take more than water based muds. (60 ppb -72 ppb).
  • Spotting Pills

  • Prior to tripping, spot a 12 ppb LCP2000 pill across the thief zone to protect the dilantancy. LCP2000 is an excellent hole sweep when pumping resumes.
  • Seepage Pills

  • Add LCP2000 'on the fly', 2 to 6 sacks/minute through the hopper and into the suction while drilling until seepage stops. 2 to 4 ppb LCP is a most effective seepage control agent.
  • Guidelines

  • Each pallet of LCP makes up 25 barrels (4M3) of a 48 lbs/bbl dilatant slurry pill. This product is Extremely EASY TO USE, it mixes readily and can be pumped though most BHA's and nozzles.
